  1. Bullet1st - 1 - Made in the USA

  2. Bullet2nd - F - Ford, M is Mercury, L is Lincoln

  3. Bullet3rd - T - Truck (Complete Vehicle)

  4. Bullet4th - Z - For trucks, this is GVWR, Class D - 5001-6001 pounds

  5. Bullet5th - R - Vehicle Line/Body Type, Ranger

  6. Bullet6-7th - 08 - Vehicle Line - Ranger EV 1999-2001, but 10 in 1998.

  7. Bullet8th - 7 - Engine Designation, 1=NiMH, 7=PbA (See note below)

  8. Bullet9th - 9 - Check Digit, helps to validate the VIN with a check sum calc.

  9. Bullet10th - X - Model Year, W=1998, X=1999, Y=2000, 1=2001

  10. Bullet11th - T - Assembly Plant, Edison, New Jersey

  11. Bullet12-17th - Bxxxxx - Production Sequence Number where any Alpha character designates a truck, MPV or incomplete vehicle, and xxxxx is the sequential assembly order.


Note: Technically, the VIN for Ranger EVs differentiates between NiMH and PbA packs by identifying the ‘engine designation’ as either 7= 71 kW 312 Volts Electric Siemens 90, or 1= 76 kW 300 Volts Electric Siemens 90.
